Coming this November, in celebration of the burgeoning film and arts industry in Singapore and to bring Singapore closer to Singaporeans away from home, the Edith Cowan University Singapore Student Association with support from the Overseas Singaporean Unit, and in support of the Arts Management Student Organisation of WAAPA is proud to present an event which will showcase short film productions from both aspiring and established film producers right here in Perth.

Dear all,

Warm greetings from Edith Cowan University Singapore Student Association, hope your all having a great start for the new year so far! :)

For those of you who have just joined us, the ECUSSA is a part of a large network of Singapore students associations that provides various supports to Singaporean students during their studies in Australia. We also conducts various events throughout the year to keep the overseas student community active and connected.

As we welcome everyone back to another year/semester, I would like share a teaser to everyone of some events that is upcoming this month. We will be holding a welcome party and Perth city tour for the new and current students to mingle and mix around before school start officially. Students overseas: Don't worry about jobs when you return

SINGAPORE - There is no need for Singaporeans studying overseas to be paranoid about their employment prospects when they return, said Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan.

At a forum here attended by about 300 Singaporeans studying in Australia, he addressed their concerns about the competition from local graduates for jobs here.

Case in point: An IT graduate who returned to Singapore last month after studying in Brisbane, Australia for a year. Though it is still early in his job search, he is worried: "I think employers in Singapore would prefer graduates from local universities ... They might not even look at my resume at all, knowing I'm an overseas graduate."But Dr Balakrishnan assured the students that Singapore is a meritocratic society. "We will select the best person for the job based on his or her ability, and performance and it doesn't depend upon your race, religion, gender, wealth, social class or where you happened to have studied in, whether it's in Australia or Singapore ... You will be judged on your own merits," he said.

He observed that many overseas graduates have returned and been offered opportunities because of the value employers saw in them.But he also reminded the students to manage their expectations - they should not expect and demand success to be delivered to their doorsteps. Last year, some 7,800 Singaporeans enrolled to study in Australia.

As such, we like to announce that various executive positions are now available, and this is an opportunity for you to part of the the next exciting team to manage SSA.

This is a student group, run by students, so experience is definitely

Australian Dollar plungers!

"The Aussie dollar stabilised somewhat during Asia yesterday, holding on to 66 cents and rallying throughout Asia and in European trade to post an overnight high of 0.7130. Yesterday’s announcement of a rise in Australian unemployment from 4.1% to 4.3% caused little reaction on the AUD as the market continued to be driven by movements in equity markets. Investors pinned their hopes of a recovery in the local unit on a possible rebound on Wall Street but were disappointed in a big way with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling over 7%. As a result AUD/USD fell sharply in late NY trade to open this morning near its lows at 0.6820 with the volatility expected to remain heading into the weekend."

Well all you peeps need to know is that the Aussie dollar has dropped significantly and was actually lower than the SGD at one stage... but has increased a little since.

The rate right now is 1.00 AUD = 0.981994 SGD. Time to buy some Aussie dollars or be kiasu and wait till it gets even lower? I'd rather buy now.

The Singapore - Western Australia Network or (SWAN) will be screening a one-hour Singapore-made movie titled ‘Invisible City’ on Sunday 10 August 2008, 3 – 5pm at the Astor Cinema, Mount Lawley. The cost is $10 per head.

This event also marks Singapore’s 43rd National Day falling on 9 August 2008.

MOVIE BACKGROUND

The Director of ‘Invisible City’ is 38 year-old Singaporean Ms Tan Pin Pin, the acclaimed director of ‘Singapore Gaga’ , declared the Straits Times’ Best Film of the Year in 2006. (Pin Pin is also known for her animated 3-minute film on Barbie Doll fantasies ‘Lurve Me Now’ (1999), banned in Singapore for its sexual content!).

‘Invisible City’, premiered at South Korea’s Pusan Film Festival in October 2006, and in July 2007 enjoyed a 7-week sell-out run in Singapore. The movie has also screened at the Berlinale and Cinema du Reel film festivals in Europe. It is supported by the Pusan International Film Festival, the Asian Network of Documentary fund, Singapore Film Commission, Institute of Southeast Asian Studies and Institute of Policy Studies (Singapore), Naresh Mahtani, and Mindwasabi. The movie budget was US$100,000 and the film took 9 months to complete.

Pin Pin has a fine eye for the ‘forgotten people’ of an ‘invisible’ Singapore. In ‘Invisible City’ she creates a collage of interviews with people who are nurturing long lost memories of Singapore, each in their own very different way. The interviews are interspersed with never-before-seen footage and photos of Singapore. Pin Pin seeks out photographers, journalists, film directors and archaeologists – people who are looking for their own version of Singapore. As Pin Pin herself says, “Invisible City documents the fight against the passing of time and the atrophy of memory.” In the movie, you see a City that could have been.

Come to ‘Invisible City’ , recapture the Singapore you hardly know, and meet, among others,

· Lim Chen Sian, the ‘Indiana Jones’ of Singapore, archaeologist extraordinaire,

· Guo Ren Huey, veteran of the Malayan People’s Anti-Japanese Force jungle guerrillas of World War II, after which he worked for Singapore’s Internal Security Department (ISD) (roughly the equivalent of ASIO in Australia),

· Han Tan Juan, Lianhe Zaobao newspaper editor and former student activist, whose political activity led to his citizenship being revoked in the 1960s,

· Dr Marjorie Topley, Ethnographer at Singapore’s Raffles Museum, expert on Chinese secret religious sects and ‘ghost marriages’,

Singapore News - Minister Ng maps out Spore's strategy on higher education.

SINGAPORE : Education Minister Ng Eng Hen said Singapore's strategy to deliver quality higher education to its people is to ensure that every publicly funded institution strives to be the best in the class.

Addressing the Australian Universities International Alumni Convention in Singapore, Dr Ng noted that nearly 180,000 international students were enrolled in Australia's higher education sector last year, contributing significantly to a S$16 billion education services industry that has become the country's third largest export income earner. And each year, nearly 10,000 Singapore students join their ranks.

Turning to the challenges facing his ministry in the area of higher education, Dr Ng said educational institutions in Singapore must provide learning that is current and relevant. It must also make a difference to their students, the industry and the overall economy.

"Our higher education system is also unapologetically closely attuned to the need to make education relevant, to help Singaporeans find a job and remain employable. This gives them the confidence that the education they have received is meaningful," said Dr Ng.

But he also cautioned against equating more education with better economic growth and jobs.

"But how we intend to do this... is just as important, if not more, because you can get it wrong if the fixation is just on numbers and not on quality or relevancy," said Dr Ng.

This explains the need for local universities to create and sustain an ecosystem made up of top researchers, and for the schools to differentiate themselves from others.

Whatever strategies universities employ and differentiate themselves in the international market, Dr Ng noted that most have come to realise that they can't do this alone. This is why most universities are going into collaborations and partnerships with other top universities in the world, so that both their students and faculty have more expanded opportunities in learning and research.

The Ministry of Education also wants up to half of all local tertiary students to take part in an overseas programme. These could be through overseas immersion, twinning activities with schools abroad or overseas community projects with funding support from the ministry. Dr Ng said this will help Singapore's undergraduates to be "world ready".

With the semester drawing to a close and exams approaching, we can only hope everyone is coping well. It is understandable that some of us may feel emotionally drained from studies and assignments or the worst case scenario, a sense of hopelessness during this period.

University life isn’t always as fun or pleasurable for students as it is made out to be, facing challenges and difficulties are all part of the game… and it really helps to have the support and assistance of loved ones or friends. This is why the importance of social interaction and moral support especially for international students cannot be overly emphasized. A student’s hopelessness can be considered as a negative expectation about themselves and their future. This can sometimes lead to depression or anxiety and therefore dissatisfying their university experiences.

“A survey of international students from RMIT and Victoria universities found that two-thirds felt depressed or sad, and many felt discriminated. The survey provides a rare glimpse into the well-being of international students in Australia: an education cash cow worth an estimated $10 billion a year.” (Source: theage.com.au) Main causes for depression for international students could range from sadness, loneliness and discrimination among others.

Are you at risk of depression? I found this interactive tool while surfing on Yahoo and have embedded it below. It can help you assess your symptoms and find out if you might have depression. It calculates how many common symptoms of depression you have and based on your answers, it suggests where you might be on a scale from not depressed to depressed.

Although this tool is not for diagnosis, it may help you find out whether you should seek help. Well I hope this post was informative… thanks for reading and best of LUCK for your coming exams! I’m sure you’ll need it.

The "Last Lecture."

We all know how lectures at University can sometimes be painfully boring. Some of us may also be guilty of skipping our lectures. I don’t know if you guys have heard of the “Last Lecture” given by a dying professor which has caused quite a stir over the internet in recent months. It is certainly one lecture that you wouldn’t want to skip.

Just a short introdution, Dr Randy Pausch is a married father of three, a very popular professor at Carnegie Mellon University—and he is dying. He is suffering from pancreatic cancer, which he says has returned after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Doctors say he has only a few months to live.

In September 2007, Randy gave a final lecture to his students at Carnegie Mellon that has since been downloaded more than a million times on the Internet. The topic was on "Achieving childhood dreams—and living your life" and many people have sinced benefited from that lecture.

On October 22, 2007, Pausch appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show where he discussed his situation and recapped his "Last Lecture" for millions of TV viewers.

Junior is the current WA DMC Champion, and is the first and only West Australian DJ to have 3 state DMC titles under his belt. He was also one of the semi-finalists at the Australian Scribble Jam Nationals.
The past few years have seen Junior play an active role in Perth’s DJ scene, and participate in numerous Turtablist Competitions. First of all, many thanks to Contact Singapore for their gracious invitation to this casual dinner! The ambience was nice, food was great and of course, the opportunity to interact with many other student leaders from all other universities in Australia was just simply awesome!

Representatives from our ECU SSA who attended this event include Wei Peng (President), Lawrence (Vice-President), Andrina (Secretary) and myself (Events Coordinator).

It was indeed a fulfilling session as the group goes into sharing of the different kinds of social events their associations had organized over the semesters for fellow Singapore students in Australia.

-Here’s Andrina and myself with Yuan Lim – the Vice President of UNSW SSA. You bet the two of us had a jolly good time yakkin’ with this fabulous girl!

A Merry Christmas to everyone!
Below is a brief of events you can expect in 2008.

08th March 2008
There will be a welcome party scheduled on 08 March at Mullaloo beach (near ocean reef). Its going to be a fun day filled with beach games and what better way to get to know each and everyone other than over a BBQ pit (Yes food provided!). Transportation will be provided for students from both Mt Lawley and Joondalup campuses.

Date to be confirmed after all four university committee members meet up.

14th - 17th April 2008 (1st 4 days of the mid semester break)
Road trip to Monkey Mia
Since we are studying in WA we need to know the countryside. Imagine people back home asking you what places you visited during your time here and all you can do is stare blankly back at them... Umm.. Perth..

Monkey Mia is a stretch of beach located in the Shark Bay World Heritage region, it is about 850km north of perth and the area is famous for their wild dophins. You can feed the dophins but not allowed to touch them (They won't bite, its to protect them). Much of the world's dolphin research is done right here.

10th May 2008
There are three options for that day that were considered and hotly debated. However due to our very democratic nature, we have decided to put it up for a vote during the welcome party.

Outgoing President’s Message

"The day has finally arrived where I will now have to leave SSA and prepare myself for my last semester at uni, planning ahead and carving a career for myself in the corporate world. This one whole year has been without a doubt one of the most unforgettable experiences in my years of study in uni.

SSA has matured a lot during the years, making its presence felt significantly in the university as well as in WA. When I took up this role as president, I had to ensure that SSA continues to be active in the ECU community. With that, to be able to find a capable team to take over year after year became an important task and today, I am glad to announce the installation of new executives that will continue to uphold the reputation of SSA since 2004.

The outgoing executives have worked closely together, organizing events internally as well as collaboration with other universities in WA. One of which is the orientation program in ECU. SSA has always actively coordinated functions within the orientation program and with that earned fees for the contribution put in. This allows us to organize more events, which benefited members of the association.

This was followed by the Annual Welcome Beach Party held at Mullaloo this year. Welcoming new students and making them feel at home has also been one of the priorities of the association. Events such as this not also allow new students to meet new people, make new friends but also allows the building of camaraderie among existing members. Mambo was the next big event organized which collaborated with WA Unis. This was highly successful with a high turnout at metro city.

This year SSA participated the annual National Liaison conference held in Melbourne. 3 delegates were sent to join a huge WA contingent consisted of delegates from UWA, Murdoch and Curtin. It was a fruitful experience, I must say, and I am sure the delegates and myself learnt a lot from this trip, from formal voting procedures to the development of policies aimed at improving the life of international students in Australia.

The second semester was filled with events such as the movie night as well as Mambo. These event were again, aimed to bring about closer ties among the students not only in SSA but also in the wider university community.

After one whole year of endless events and buzz, it is finally time for the outgoing executives to bid goodbye and welcome the incoming committee with open arms. I believed this whole year has been a fruitful experience and the outgoing executives have developed necessary skills in terms of leadership, communication, events organizing and conflict handling which will definitely benefit them in the long run.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing executives, Weipeng, Keane, Stuart, Lawrence, Joeann, Candace and Mark for their excellent efforts and contribution throughout the year. Without them, all this would not have been possible. I would also like to thank the SSA advisors Fozzil and Nicholas Tan for guiding me along and offering help when we most need them. I would also like to thank the many ECU staffs, University and association representatives for supporting ECUSSA. I most definitely appreciate all the help that you have given us this past year.

Finally, I am also very glad to pass on the seat to Weipeng which I believe will take SSA and its committee to greater heights. Weipeng has shown great leadership qualities, reliability and is fun to work with. I am sure the new team will enjoy working with him.

With that, I wish the incoming executives all the best and an exciting year ahead! I am confident the new team will bring us great things in the future.

Police charge man with murder of Chinese student Jiao Dan, 22

A MAN charged with murdering 22-year-old Chinese student Jiao Dan has been remanded in custody after appearing in East Perth Magistrates Court today.

Daniel Adam Wright, 35, of Gwelup, was charged yesterday with wilfully murdering 22-year-old Jiao Dan late on Monday night.

Her semi-naked body was found on the verge outside a home in north suburban Innaloo, close to where she lived, early on Tuesday morning.

In the East Perth Magistrates court today, Wright's lawyer Ernesto Godinez handed Magistrate Catherine Crawford a letter regarding his client from a mental health nurse.

Wright was remanded in custody until October 17, when he will appear in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court.

Ms Jiao had been studying commerce at Edith Cowan University for a year and was working part-time as a cleaner before her death.

About 15 of Ms Jiao's student friends and members of the Perth Chinese Christian Church she had attended were at the court today.

Outside the court, close friend Min Ding said Ms Jiao's parents had been trying to come to Perth since their daughter was murdered.

"Her parents collapsed a few times and they had to cancel their flights a few times because they can't really fly,'' she said.

Ms Min said China's one-child policy meant it was all the harder for the parents.

"If you lose one child, the only child in the family, you lose everything, you lose your dream, you lose the caring from the child when you get old, you lose hope.''

The Chinese Christian Church's Reverend Philip Tay said they were planning a special service for Ms Jiao.

"Her tragic death is a very big loss for our whole community, for everyone of us,'' Reverend Tay said.

Min Ding said other Chinese students she had talked to were now feeling insecure about living in Perth.

"Dear Students and Fellow Staff and Council Members,

The ECU Community is deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic death of our student Jiao Dan, near her home in Perth earlier this week.

Jiao Dan was highly regarded by staff of the University and by fellow students. She was a very strong student, achieving Distinctions and was generous and caring, with a great spirit and a wonderful sense of fun and happiness. These qualities which she exhibited in abundance make her death so much harder for us to come to terms with.

ECU staff and students have been working with external groups, particularly the WA Police and the Chinese Consul-General in Perth, to provide support for Jiao Dan’s family and friends as we all struggle to come to terms with this tragic loss. In addition the WA Police are undertaking an extensive investigation into the circumstances of Jiao Dan’s death

We are well advanced in arrangements for Jiao Dan’s family to come to Perth. We have also been communicating with Hunan University’s leadership, Jiao Dan’s originating University, to provide them with as much information as we have available to us here in Perth.

Counselling services are being used by many students and staff at ECU. Students can access these by phoning 9370 6706 and staff via the "Employee Assistance Program", on 1300 361 008. These services are free and available to anyone in the University Community.

This morning a large group of students, mainly international, and mainly from China, met with leaders of ECU, WA Police and counsellors to communicate our great sense of loss because of Jiao Dan’s tragic death and to continue the process of working through the deep grief we feel. WA Police also answered many questions from students as far as they were able, bearing in mind that they do not wish to compromise any evidence that they have at present.

The safety of all of our students, and of our staff, is the utmost priority for the University leadership. If any student or staff member has concerns for their safety, it is important that they make immediate contact with a Security Officer by using one of the security phones located around the campuses or by phoning 6304 3333. A staff member of ECU Security Services will also escort you to your car on campus or to a bus stop on a campus perimeter.

I encourage you all to learn more about personal security and safety by visiting the Security and Traffic Services website http://www.ecu.edu.au/fas/sts/ or by calling the Security Services office on 6304 2722 or 6304 2150.

The principles that we use to guide safety on our campuses also apply off-campus, especially that of not walking alone at night time.

It is my intention during my official visit to China later in October, which has been pre-arranged for some six months, to visit Hunan University to meet with their leadership and their staff and students and to help them come to terms with this tragedy.

I thank the great number of staff and students for the amazing support and leadership that they have shown in the aftermath of this shocking loss. I particularly thank Claire Brown and Ding Min (an ECU alumnus), and Marjorie Tidman and many others for their professionalism, sensitivity, and extraordinary generosity at a difficult time for all of us, including themselves. I also thank the WA Police in whom I have great confidence.

I will make contact again as soon as I am in a position to provide further information.

In the meantime I ask that members of the University Community express their grief and their support by writing in the Condolence Books which we have established to honour the late Jiao Dan. The Condolence Books will be available at Student Central at each Campus from Wednesday 17 October."

Homicide investigation Update

POLICE arrested a 35-year-old man at a relative's home in Crocker Way, Innaloo at 12.25pm today.

The man has been taken to the Major Crime squad's headquarters, where he is being questioned over the death of Chinese student Jiao Dan.

In addition to forensic examination of the Crocker Way house, officers are also raiding a property in Loncar Rise, Gwelup, that is believed to be owned by an elderly woman.

"This man is being interviewed in relation to the murder of Jiao Dan in Oswald St, Innaloo earlier this week,'' said Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Boult.

"As a result of footage that we obtained from the Public Transport Authority and analysis of that footage, that has led us to this address,'' he said at a press conference in Crocker Way.

"Video footage has provided us with information in relation to the identity of a person, which led us to this address.''

Det Sen-Sgt Boult refused to say whether the man was known to Miss Jiao.

The breakthrough comes four days after the body of Jiao Dan was found on the grass street verge near the Oswald St home where she lived.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Boult has refused to say how Jiao Dan died or whether she was the victim of a sex attack, but he said preliminary pathology results confirmed she was murdered.

The 22-year-old's body was found on the road verge on Tuesday just 50m from where she lived.

Det Snr-Sgt Boult said Ms Dan was seen on rail security video getting off at Stirling Station and would have taken about 10 to 15 minutes to walk to Oswald St.

He said police believe she was murdered soon after getting off the train at the location where her partially naked body was found.

He said it was possible she was followed by her attacker from the station or crossed paths with the person on the way home.

Ms Dan, who was studying at Edith Cowan University, was returning home after finishing part time work for the evening at a Leederville sports and recreation centre.

A passer-by found Ms Dan's body stripped from the waist down on the verge at about 6am on Monday.

A bag, a pair of shoes and neatly folded jeans were found next to her.

Det-Sgt Boult said five men living in the house closest to where the body was discovered were questioned by detectives but police had no reason to believe they were connected to the murder.

Close friend Min Ding said Ms Dan was a very considerate person.

"She's a very clever girl,'' she said.

"She's a Christian, she's just a new baptised Christian from Christmas. She's a very nice person. She's always thinking of others.''

Det-Sgt Boult said the murder was a warning for women against walking alone in poorly lit areas at night.

Regardless of where ECU stands, responsibility ultimately falls to the students in making the best use of their institutional experience. ECU can be seen as a modern and dynamic university. Apart from offering up-to-date, market demand courses, ECU also boasts excellent facilities especially in terms of investment in its IT infrastructure and new building projects that greatly facilitate the student's overall educational progress. Teaching from lecturers is also at a competitive and high level.

I personally feel ECU just needs to attract more quality students and as current students, we need to show we have the necessary quality and substance. Eventually we graduate with ECU degrees and basically become ambassadors to our university...

Hope everyone is settling well this semester, especially the new students. If you experience any difficulties or need any assistance, we may be able to help or at least point you to the right direction.

SSA at the "NLC Annual Conference 2007, 8th -13th July" in Melbourne...

“The NLC Annual Conference is the supreme decision-making body of NLC where national policies are formulated and then implemented by the NLC National Executive in co-operation with NLC Branches and International Student Organizations on tertiary campuses.” - NLC

In simple terms, this conference is about bringing together delegates (international student leaders) from various Universities across different states in Australia for the common purpose of discussing and debating current issues faced by overseas students on a national level. Delegates then begin the crucial task of formulating new policies or amending existing standing policies that contribute towards the well-being of international students.

After weaving through tons of constitutional formalities and a thorough voting process, successful policies would then be lobbied by the NLC National Executive (made up of elected student leaders at the conference) to various Government bodies. NLC basically represents the “voice” of international students and ensures our rights are protected and made known to us.

The Conference consisted of workshops and policy debates covering issues such as:

-ACCOMODATION

-SKILLED MIGRATION SCHEME ► New Changes - Effective September 1st 07

-STUDENT VISA ► WWW.IMMI.GOV.AU

-WORKING RIGHTS

-RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS OF AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ► NEW ESOS FRAMEWORK

-ENSURING THAT AN EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIA IS OF HIGH QUALITY, SAFE, ENJOYABLE AND ULTIMATELY REWARDING.

Representatives from SSA, MSA (Malaysian Students Association), ASA (African Students Association) and the ISA (Indian Students Association) formed the contingent representing ECU’s International Students Council.

A new semester begins soon... so is ORIENTATION 071!

This semester, ECU has organised a series of exciting social events for all new students as well as our very own ECU Singapore students association (SSA) Welcome party! This not only allows you to familiarise yourself with the new environment but also to forge new friendships!

Orientation begins officially on 5th Feb 2007 and ends on the 23rd of Feb.

Tiger Airways to fly Perth to Singapore

Good news for Singapore Students in WA!

Low-cost Singaporean airline Tiger Airways will start flights between Perth and Singapore in March.

West Australian Tourism Minister Sheila McHale said the services would start on March 23, initially with four flights a week but increasing to daily services in November.

Return fares will start at about $300.

"We currently get about 57,000 visitors from Singapore every year and that should increase significantly as holidaymakers take advantage of Tiger Airways' low prices," Ms McHale said.

"WA should also benefit from an increase in visitor numbers from markets other than Singapore as Tiger Airways expands its flights into our emerging markets like China." - AAP News
